Blurry Beginnings Make for a 20/20 Wedding

They say love is blind, but for Kayli and Phil, it’s more like far-sighted. After their beautiful Woodsgate wedding, the couple reflected on the unique way their love story began—with an unexpected and unforgettable interaction. From that moment on, the rest was history.

Tell us how and when you met each other. What was your first impression of one another, and at what moment did you know you’d be together forever?

We were in the same vet school class. We knew of each other, but the first time we ever talked to each other was one morning [when] I was running through the student lounge and I saw someone from far away. I didn’t have my glasses on so I didn’t realize it was [Phil] until I was nearly passed him. He looked like he had wanted to say, “hello,” and I felt like I snubbed him. I felt awkward about the interaction and on my way back through, I stopped and apologized to him and said, “If you see me and I don’t have my glasses on, then I probably cannot see you until I’m much closer,” and he was like “SAME.” He had been doing the exact same thing and also felt bad because he had wanted to say hello but hadn’t realized it was me until I was basically past him. So we bonded over our far-sighted-ness and our awkwardness.

I don’t know that it was an exact moment for either of us when we realized we wanted to spend forever together. But from the moment we met we just started including each other in everything we did. We integrated each other into our friend groups and spent all our free time together. It just slowly became apparent to each of us (according to Phil he came to the conclusion before me haha) that there was just no way we would ever want to be with anyone else.

Tell us about the proposal, share some pics, and show us your ring!

Every year Phil’s family takes the same summer vacation to Ocean City, Maryland. When I started going with them, the activity he was the most excited to show me was Assateague Island. It has wild horses and you can drive around and find them. The first few years we went, it was my favorite part of the vacation – I always looked forward to it. Phil, his dad, and I would wake up super early and drive out.

On the vacation in 2021, we woke up early on the day we had planned to go and his dad came out to tell us he wasn’t feeling well and was going to skip the trip to Assateague Island. I felt so bad because I knew he enjoyed it also, so the whole time we continued getting ready, I kept telling Phil “Maybe we shouldn’t go and go on a different day when your dad feels better, I feel bad.” And he just kept being like don’t worry about it, he wants us to go. So I was like ok…

We get out there, we are seeing so many animals (we are veterinarians, so we love all the animals lol) we get out onto this little secluded beach part of the hike, no one is around, I see something in the distance, and I start walking towards it, lost in my own curiosity and I hear, “ahem.” Turn around and Phil is about 10 feet behind me, down on one knee. I then proceeded to, I guess, run back to him saying something (I always say I blacked out because I honestly don’t remember). In this time, he had asked me to marry him, [but] I didn’t hear him because [I] remember, babbling and hurrying back to him. I stand there stupidly waiting for him to ask, [while] he’s waiting for my answer, [and] I’m like, “Aren’t you going to ask me?” and he’s like, “Aren’t you going to say yes???”

It was all so embarrassing. I am so glad no one actually saw us haha but he asked again, I of course said yes, and here we are. (The picture of us in sunglasses with my hand up is right after the proposal. We did engagement photos way later).

What led you to Stroudsmoor Country Inn? What inspired you to celebrate your wedding with us?

My family lives in upstate NY and Phil’s is in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia so I had wanted a place that met in the middle as much as possible. In my extensive google-mapping I found that the Poconos were a good in-between. I know nothing about the Poconos other than I’ve heard the fall is pretty. I looked up a bunch of places and from pictures I fell in love with the woodland ceremony site. We booked a trip to get a tour… we never even looked at another venue. Between the ceremony site, the people who work at Stroudsmoor, and the surrounding area I was sold immediately.

What is the one menu item that sticks out above all else from your wedding celebration? What about your favorite décor detail?

To ask me to rate the food at Stroudsmoor is cruel. My dinner was my favorite at the sampling event, and I loved it on our wedding day which was the pork chop with sausage stuffing. There was some kind of beef on a stick appetizer that Phil and I were both obsessed with, but we don’t know exactly what it was. As far as décor, I asked for “tons of candles,” and I felt like that was definitely executed which I loved. I really loved everything, but I will…say my centerpieces, which I’ve included a picture of.

What made your Wedding Journey with us most memorable?

Hands-down the coordinators. Linda was who helped us plan everything, and Belkis and Corinne were our day-of team. I am forever grateful to them for all their advice and guidance. Our guests could not stop talking about how amazing they all were.

What is one hope you have in celebrating your first anniversary?

In the very near future our next big milestone is buying our first house. This has been very exciting to plan together. We hope that by the time our first year anniversary comes we will be settled into our new home!
